Edward Friel, '84, Shareholder at Schneider Downs, was honored with the Catholic Charities Caritas Legacy of Love Award at the 35th annual Bishop's Dinner for Catholic Charities held on May 19, 2017. The Legacy of Love award is traditionally given to a member of the community who exemplifies the values and mission of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and devotes their time and talent to better the Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh.
"It's an honor to be recognized for giving back to an organization that has helped me and so many others," said Friel. "I should be the one giving the Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh the recognition."
This year's theme, "Stories of Love," celebrated the real definition of love, which is to see one another through God's eyes and want the absolute best for each other.
Each honoree was asked to share their six-word story of love. Friel shared his six-word story of love, which is "be grateful, have faith, give back."
"My six-word story of love is pretty simple," said Friel. "I think we all have something to be grateful for, even when we are having a bad day. Try to take the positive out of any situation. Never give up your faith, it's what keeps you going. Lastly, try to give back and help others."
Central Catholic was well represented at the event. In addition to Friel's award, the event was chaired by Gabe and Gloria Hudock, parents of Stephen Hudock, '18 and John Hudock, '11. Gabe and Gloria were also the chairs of the 2016 Viking Victory Auction.
"Central Catholic was very instrumental in my development as a leader," said Friel. "I challenged myself throughout my high school career and was pushed by my teachers to work hard and think about why I did something. I would advise any Central Catholic student to always have a takeaway from every experience they have and to build on that to help them grow and learn."
